Formerly known as Nanyang Technological Institute Muslim Society, or NTIMS for short, it had been formed by a group of students in 1987 with the intention of providing a religious platform for the students of NTI. Organising talks by religious leaders, holding sporting events as well as engaging its members in community work with external organizations such as the Darul Ihsan Orphanage, the pioneer members of NTIMS had set the trend for future members to follow.
Since then, NTUMS, as it was later known, has been a society that has worked towards maintaining a holistic approach. Members are given the opportunity to continue pursuing religious knowledge despite their academic demands in school and many opportunities are also made so that its members can develop themselves as leaders in the community. Many of the NTUMS members have continued to contribute to society after their graduation, volunteering in established organisations such as MENDAKI, Saff-Perdaus and also, working to impact the community at the governmental level.
Twenty-one years since its first formation, NTUMS has grown in diversity, boasting a membership that transcends race, language, culture and nationality. As such, NTUMS has started PELITA, a humanitarian wing that serves to reach out to the needs of overseas communities. With an understanding of the demands of Muslim youths in the twenty-first century, NTUMS has set itself as the leading Muslim society at the tertiary level which intends to serve both the local and global community. With annual events such as AlterRisk, a camp jointly-organised with MENDAKI for youths at risk, and annual overseas expeditions to countries such as Indonesia and Cambodia, the society has grown from a humble beginning to one that holds a wide network within the local and global region. Nevertheless, NTUMS believes that it is merely a channel that allows for NTU Muslim students and external organizations to work together to discover their fullest potential and move towards Mardhatillah.
